One in five of us will suffer from some form of mental illness in our lifetime.
Yet, our society, which speaks openly about everything, is largely silent when it comes to mental illness.
Over 60% of those struggling with mental illness do not seek treatment.
These illnesses cost our society billions of dollars in lost productivity.
Serious mental illnesses reduce life expectancy by 10 to 20 years, an analysis by Oxford University psychiatrists has shown – a loss of years that’s equivalent to or worse than that for heavy smoking.
There is serious stigma attached to mental illness. The CDC reports that only 25% of people with mental health issues feel that other people are compassionate and sympathetic toward them. Although one in four people have been affected by some form of mental illness, a lack of empathy and knowledge about it contributes to stigma associated with mental illness. People still don’t understand that being diagnosed with a mental illness isn’t something that is in their control – just like having cancer isn’t in their control.
